A magnificently crafted Kays Cabernet that sings with the mineral texture of the ancient soils of this legendary vineyard, loaded with all of the concentration that we love about Kays, yet with a purity, fragrance, crunch and restraint in the cool 2017 season like perhaps never before. It promises great things in the cellar.

McLaren Vale Cabernet, as I so often say, is much better than its reputation. Perhaps that’s why I feel an affinity for it … Blueberry, chocolate, toasted hazelnut, cedar and aniseed. Its plump and plush, sweetly red and black fruited with layers of fine powdery tannin, some tobacco and earth, and a solid and satisfying finish.

Named after Colin Kay’s father, Cuthbert hails from the coolest parcel of the Amery Vineyard. In this elegant vintage, it reveals perfumed, silky blueberry, blackcurrant and, with a splash of 7% Merlot, fleshier plum. Signature savoury nuances of linseed, tea leaf, balsamic, spice and earth add layers of complexity. Slinky, fine tannins make for a long, refined finish. Aged 18 months in French oak 30% new, 90% hogsheads, 10% barriques. Drink from 2020 to 2030.

Classic mint and cassis notes appear on the nose. The cool year seems to have benefited the variety, as the wine shows remarkable depth and balance. Its medium-bodied but generous, with ample flesh set against fine-grained, almost silky tannins. Even after 18 months in French oak (hogsheads & barriques) the oak influence is muted, letting the gorgeous fruit shine on the mouthwatering finish. Drink now till 2035.
