Another whopper from Moppa! This perennial overachiever is sourced from the Kalleske family's mature Greenock and Moppa Hill vineyards. The 2016 blend weighs in at 82% Greenock and 18% Moppa. The grapes were 100% destemmed and fermented as whole berries, with 25% made in larger fermenters. Following fermentation the wine was then fed to oak barrels, with skins hand-shovelled out of the fermenters into the basket press. The blended wine was then matured for 20 months in 50% French hogsheads (10% new), 45% American hogsheads (4% new) and 5% new Hungarian oak hogsheads. Shawn Kalleske thinks he's hit the nail on the head with this one: ("the perfect weight for Jack's Shiraz, this wine is everything it should be and more!") and it would be hard to argue otherwise. In a Barossan context, it's the life of the party.
Winemaker notes: Dark core with a crimson/purple rim. Lively Satsuma plums entice the nose with a mix of mulberry and blackberry. Florals of lavender and herbs are noted with the usual suspects of mixed spices, black pepper and star anise. With juicy forest fruits upfront it has a delicate nature with an unassuming powerful side. Lingering spice compliments the solid back palate, finishing with fine grain tannins.
