2019 Oakridge 864 Aqueduct Block Henk Vineyard Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley

Medium cherry-red colour with purple tints. Red cherries and raspberries leap from the glass, underneath a hint of dust and spice. Medium to full-bodied, there's distinct fruit intensity that is matched to complexing layers of sweet spices and curing meats. That intensity is matched to a firm but well-poised tannic profile, giving great length and drive to the finish. From a north-facing site at 225m elevation, on red volcanic soils in Woori Yallock, planted in 2008 to MV6. Cropped 7t/ha. Hand harvested and sorted before destemming 80% of the berries into open fermenters, the balance whole bunches. Natural ferment lasting 21 days, then pressed to French barrels (10% new) for natural mlf and 10 months on lees, followed by another 6 months on lees in tank before bottling. The 864 Single Block wines are the pinnacle of the Oakridge range. They have the X-factor. Once again, pinot noir from the Henk vineyard rises to the occasion this vintage. If feels effortless. Perfect amalgam of aromas and flavours. The textural tannins are so velvety soft, yet add shape, with flashes of raspberry acidity throughout.

Deep red and with a purple hue. Densely fruited aromas of red cherry, cranberry and pomegranate. Sweet spice elements are interwoven beautifully with the fruit and its all framed and by some subtle stylish oak.

The palate displays lashing of fruits, the full spectrum red and dark berries cascade down the mouth. Supple tannins and balanced acidity support the fruit and provide excellent length and persistence of flavour. This is a beautiful wine, layered and complex. A piece Pinot Noir of excellence.
