Light to medium straw-yellow colour. Ripe peaches and maple-smoked bacon aromas. The palate opens with ripe pineapple fruit then morphs towards smoky bacon and honey-roasted nuts through the middle. Great acidity offers a lightness to the mouth-feel, which accentuates the freshness to balance the serious power packed in. Goes incredibly long and lingers with a savoury-smoky note that I could ponder for hours. Will cellar well for many years 02 JAN 2022 Drink 2022–2032

Grown on 12 rows of chardonnay planted at Bannockburn near Geelong in the mid 1970s.

Fabulous release. It feels rich and powerful from the outset and yet the flavours just soar on and on. It’s a wine of real presence. Stonefruit, cream, quartz, smoky oak and crushed fennel. This delivers in spades. It’s a super wine.

Named for Bannockburn founder Stuart Reginald Hooper, Bannockburn SRH Chardonnay uses fruit sourced from Estate’s oldest Chardonnay vines at Olive Tree Hill Vineyard.

Followers of Bannockburn will know that S.R.H. comes off the oldest, lowest-yielding Chardonnay vines in the Olive Tree Hill vineyard and is named in recognition of Bannockburn’s founder, Stuart Reginald Hooper. These twelve rows of 45-year-old vines have roots well embedded in the ancient marine sediments that form the bedrock in this area. They seem to suck the minerality right out of their subsoil and deliver a spine-tingling wash of salinity to support the intense richness of flavour and texture for which this benchmark is well known.

The 2018 was wild-fermented in French oak puncheons and hogsheads (25% new), and then spent 11 months on lees with no stirring, undergoing full malolactic fermentation. Sulphur was only added before bottling in February 2019. Our clients won't need reminding of the energy and layered definition of this special Victorian vintage—here you get all the power, depth and complex stone fruit/saline intensity that we expect of this site, with the added freshness and drive of a great vintage.
