If you love white Burgundy, then this has many of the textural and mineral qualities that make those wines so exciting. Fine melted-butter, peanut and baking-yeast notes make this very distinctive. Long, creamy finish. A cuvée of 50% pinot noir planted in 1983 and 50% chardonnay planted in 1957. Disgorged in December 2020. Drink now.

One of my favorite wines in the Laherte range was the 2015 Extra-Brut Les Empreintes, a full-bodied, layered and concentrated wine evocative of exotic fruits, mandarin, pear and buttered toast. Fleshy and elegantly muscular, it's bright and lively, concluding with a long, saline finish. As usual, it's a blend of Pinot Noir and some muscaté selections of Chardonnay.

The 2015 Extra Brut Les Empreintes, equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, is a terrific wine in this challenging year. Bright and effusive, with lovely floral top notes, the 2015 is a model of precision and grace. All the elements are so nicely balanced. The Empreinte is not the most complex wine in the range this year, but it is super delicious and full of appeal. Dosage is 4 grams per liter.

Disgorged December 2020.This wine offers what Laherte refers to as the “quintessence of the Chavot terroir.” It is always a selection of Laherte’s five best barrels from each of his two finest Chavot terroirs: old-vine Chardonnay from a site in Les Chemins d’Épernay (planted in 1957 on clay with chalky subsoils, with around a third of the fruit the rare Chardonnay-Muscaté); and Pinot Noir from Les Rouges Maisons (planted in the late ‘80s on a deep soil rich in clay, flint and schist). Both wines were vinified separately and entirely raised in old Burgundian barrels, including portions fermented in second-hand DRC Le Montrachet barrels. The dosage was four grams per litre.

There is genuine depth and texture from the old vines and the clay of Les Chemins d’Épernay but this opulence is vibrantly balanced by crystalline freshness and a long, classy finish. A superb and unique Champagne that clearly speaks of its terroir. If you love great white Burgundy, then this has a similar set of textural and mineral qualities.
