This nails the vintage at its best: vibrant cassis has a mouthwatering bevy of bramble and cedar that are put in their place by the purity and power of the cabernet varietal fruit. The tannins are in a similar boat - they are exactly what cabernet needs if it is to fulfil expectations. Its balance will carry its long life.

In a world where consumers increasingly look for friendly red wines of softness and youthful appeal, cabernet sauvignon’s perceived austerity makes it rather less popular than it used to be. Traditionally tannic, shy in ripe fruit and severe in flavour, those classically styled cabernets often needed long years in bottle to be transformed into perfumed softness and elegance. But not all cabernet is like that. This wine from South Australia’s Clare Valley is gentle, soft, refined, and deliciously drinkable. It smells of blackcurrants, mulberries, flowers and forests. Cedary oak is underplayed. It’s soft and silky in the mouth, medium-bodied and beautifully integrated with savoury grainy tannins. Deepish red colour with a good tinge of purple, and a crushed leafy, tobaccoey, mulberry bouquet which is St-Émilion-like and echoed by elegance on the tongue. It’s medium to full-bodied and soft-textured but also has line and length. Merlot suspected, but it's not listed on the bottle. Medium to deep red. Gorgeous, fragrant nose of ripe blackcurrants, crushed violets and some attractive cigar box/ cedary French oak. Quite lifted and perfumed – absolutely typical with this wine. Quite a rich palate brimming with red currants, cherries and cassis plus a little charry French oak providing both interest and structure.
