Disgorged 2017 Tasted in Champagne and Australia
40% chardonnay, 60% pinot; 11 grand and premier crus; fermented in stainless steel tanks, cru by cru, variety by variety; 10g/L dosage; technological cork; 40,000 bottles
A full yet bright-yellow hue with a gold tint heralds the succulent generosity of Charles and the exuberant, exotic richness of 2006, yet with definition and poise. A glorious assemblage of golden grilled pineapple, juicy white peach, fig, tarte tatin, toffee, warm honey, brioche, truffles, vanilla, candied almonds, roast chestnuts, nutmeg, cinnamon, even hints of pipe smoke and high-cocoa dark chocolate – definitive, flamboyant and luscious Charles! The firm, fine phenolic grip of this warm season is well set against its juicy creaminess, melding seamlessly with pronounced chalk mineral grit (of Oger and Vertus in particular), boasting a structure that would obliterate any mortal cuvée. It holds magnificent line, length, poise and integrity, even in the midst of such proportions and not inconsiderable structure. A fantastic 2006 to drink now and over the next few years.
