2019 Adelina Nebbiolo, Adelaide Hills

For several years, Adelina has been working with an exciting parcel of Nebbiolo fruit from the Bowe Lees Loveys vineyard at Woodside. The site is 390 metres above sea level and was planted between 1998 and 2002. Lovingly managed by Adam Loveys, Anne Lees & Michael Bowe, sadly the growers lost their property and most of their vines in the tragic fires late in 2019. So, this will be the last release of what has been a beacon in Australia’s Nebbiolo firmament.
 
The fruit was handpicked and crushed to fermenter; then, a healthy 95 days on skins. We’ll take your lunga macerazione and double it. Post pressing, the wine was racked to large-format French oak for 15 months for (indigenous) malo and maturation. It’s bottled with as much primary charm as possible, and boy, does it shine; it’s a fitting tribute to a much-missed vineyard.
 
“If you’re used to Adelina Nebbiolo, and like it, it’s fair to say this is more of the same. Poached strawberry, dusty spices, mint, some dried flower perfume, and a little nutty with it. Medium-bodied, crisp, but kind of soft too, all red fruits, a little new leather, fine chalk dust tannin, and a general squishy charm and fragrance, some orange peel and amaro flavour in the aftertaste. Always a lovely drink, feathery, charming, delicate, and no change here.”
