Grilled herbs, orange zest, black plums, cherries, peach stones and peppercorns on the nose. Medium-bodied with creamy tannins, It's deliciously round and fruity, yet firm, with a long and polished finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. So drinkable already. Drink or hold.

The Le Macchiole 2020 Bolgheri Rosso is 50% Merlot, 20% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a powerhouse wine that has become a steady little engine for the estate economy, growing from a production of 36,000 bottles to 140,000 bottles made annually today. This vintage does a terrific balancing act with dark fruit and concentration on the one hand and an accessible easy-drinking personality on the other. Black fruit cedes to baked brioche, spice and toasted aniseed. The wine finishes for 10 months in a combination of second, third and fourth-year barrique, and about 30% of the total goes into cement. The finish is polished and fresh, and you get good value.

I enjoyed an epic tasting with Le Macchiole proprietor Cinzia Merli, Winemaker Luca Rettondini and Vineyard Manager Elia Campolmi (Cinzia's son). We tasted three vintages each of the three headline wines Paleo (Cabernet Franc), Scrio (Syrah) and Messorio (Merlot). I gave final scores to the 2019s that are on the market now. I gave a range of scores to the 2020s that we tasted from barrel, but I decided not to give scores (only initial impressions) to the 2021s because these still have a long way to go. The 2020s will hit the market in March 2024. The 2021s are gorgeous, and I look forward to tasting these samples at a later date. Le Macchiole is organic, although they are not currently certified. This will change in 2023 when the winery will obtain certification. The team is especially involved with maintaining the surrounding forests for the sake of biodiversity and for a more functional purpose in that these "green lungs" are beneficial to vine health.

Le Macchiole’s style is intimately related to the terroir in Bolgheri that leads to unique, original wines with great character. From the very first harvest through the most recent vintages, the philosophy has not changed; instead, it is in constant evolution, allowing for the winery to be contemporary while at the same time staying true to its values. Today more than ever, Le Macchiole makes wines of place with great elegance, refinement, and longevity capable of coming into their own in the most natural way possible.First bottled in 2004, this wine is the purest and most unadulterated expression of Bolgheri for Le Macchiole. It is a red that possesses grace and intensity and that is eminently drinkable without compromising structure and complexity.

Usually from two new younger vineyards planted in 2012 and 2015. One is a rocky hillside vineyard and the other is quite sandy. This is supplemented by fruit that does not make the grade for the Paleo, Scrio and Messorio. Fermentation is done in stainless steel – 15 days. Press and decant for 1 month. Then 60% goes into old barriques and 40% is held in concrete for about 8 months and then the wine is blended.
