Aromas of raspberries and cherries mingle with notes of peony, dark chocolate and spices in an incipiently complex bouquet introducing Pierrot's 2018 Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Tavannes. It's a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated wine that's beautifully balanced and energetic, displaying considerable structural finesse. Readers who have not yet registered how refined the wines of Santenay can be should taste this cuvée and take note.
As I wrote last year, this 14-hectare, organic and biodynamic domaine is run by the affable Ludovic Pierrot, whose late wife, Anne, was the daughter of Michel Clair—scion of an important Santenay dynasty—who founded the estate in 1985. Organic farming in this part of the Côte de Beaune is still decidedly rare, so it's surprising that the Abbaye de Santenay flies so far below the radar in Anglophone markets. Once again, I was impressed by the supple, charming reds and pure, precise whites reviewed here, and the wines come recommended. Magnums of the domaine's 2016 reds, still available in the marketplace, particularly merit the attention of savvy consumers.
