Fruit from the Estate Old Block (planted 1978) and the North vineyard, Block 12 (planted 1995), both to the Houghton clone. Matured for 18 months in French oak (46% new). This wine absolutely needs a decant prior to drinking, so this bracket was poured before lunch – it has been in the glass nearly an hour – and still it is opening. The tannins require us to start at the finish, as they close around the fruit. However, they are superfine, pumice-like, and shape the red fruit in the mouth. This is a sophisticated, powder-fine cabernet that shows the power and might of the 2018 vintage, albeit in its inherently restrained manner. This is svelte and it will live an age.
