2021 Craggy Range Aroha Pinot Noir, Martinborough

Deep red-purple colour, quite saturated and impressively intense; a glorious bouquet of powerful dark-cherry fruit, the palate likewise deep and well-structured with abundant powdery, drying tannins leading into a long-lasting finish. Any whole-bunch influence is very discreet. The cherry fruit speaks the loudest. This will richly reward cellaring.

Fragrant, floral pinot noir with cassis, dark cherry, red rose, cacao nib the dominant flavours right now, with many other more subtle characters in support. I love the enlivening acid and tannic structure which gives the wine an exciting energy. Although it can certainly be appreciated now the wine promises to develop even greater complexity with bottle age. 23 MAY 2023 Drink 2023–2033

You'll have to wait a few months for this Pinot Noir to be released, but it’s too good not to shout about now. Julian Grounds is a recent Australian import who’s already creating a stir. In recent years, Craggy hasn't always hit the peaks of its promise, but this wine is really quite something. A beautiful, perfumed nose with lifted rose and violet, that continues on the lithe, sinewy and incredibly lengthy palate. Not big, brash or showy, just effortlessly beautiful.
