Dr Andrew Pirie is among a select few vignerons to be genuinely considered a legend of the Australian wine industry. After more than 30 years producing, consulting and guiding the production of wines in Tasmania Apogee is the culmination of all his years of experience.
The philosophy at Apogee is simple; produce single vineyard wines from the best small holdings of no more than 2Ha., using Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris that Pirie has personally selected to make the finest sparkling wines available from Tasmania.
The main production is a classically blended, traditional-method sparkling comprising around 35 % of pinot noir and 40% chardonnay and the balance from Pinot Meunier.
Comprising 46% Pinot Noir, 46% Chardonnay and 8% Pinot Meunier; 25% ferment in French oak barriques; aged 42 months on lees; 8.5g/L dosage; currently disgorged 27 June 2018
Presence, depth and character meet the cool tension of Piper's River in a cuvée of detail and personality. Pinot noir takes the lead in spicy red apple fruit, backed by the citrus crunch of chardonnay. Partial fermentation in old oak heightens spicy complexity and texture, while the lingering, cool acid line of northern Tasmania defines a long finish.
Light to medium yellow colour with a smoky, toasty almost burnt-toast bouquet, which is mellow and mature and loaded with charm. Substantial aldehydes. Background hints of grassiness and honey. A trace of roasted hazelnut starting up. The wine is full and rich in the mouth, loaded with flavour and considerably complex. The sweetness is not obvious but helps to fill out and round off the palate.24 MAY 2019 Drink 2019–2023
