2005 Marc Brédif Vouvray Museum Release from the Loire Valley is a beautifully matured Chenin Blanc that showcases the estate’s mastery of crafting long-lived wines. Marc Brédif, founded in 1893 in the heart of Vouvray, is celebrated for producing wines of extraordinary purity, tension and longevity — and this Museum Release is drawn from their cool, limestone cellars, where bottles have rested undisturbed for nearly two decades before release.

The fruit is sourced from old vines growing on the chalky tuffeau soils above the Loire River. These porous, mineral-rich soils, combined with the region’s temperate climate and long growing season, give Chenin Blanc its unique ability to balance richness and freshness. The 2005 vintage was an exceptional one in the Loire Valley — warm, sunny and dry, producing perfectly ripe fruit with excellent natural acidity. After hand harvesting, the grapes were gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel to preserve aromatic precision, before ageing on fine lees to build texture and complexity.

In the glass it shines deep gold, showing the graceful maturity of time. The aroma is captivating and layered, offering quince, baked apple, honey and dried apricot alongside hints of chamomile, lanolin, spice and chalky mineral. The palate is rich and textural yet beautifully balanced, combining flavours of ripe orchard fruit, lemon curd and almond with a fine spine of acidity. The finish is long, elegant and subtly saline, echoing the limestone soils from which it was born.

It pairs beautifully with roast duck, pork with apple, creamy chicken dishes, or blue cheese. It’s equally wonderful alongside tarte Tatin or enjoyed on its own as a contemplative wine. This Museum Release is drinking superbly now but will continue to evolve gracefully for another decade or more, gaining honeyed and nutty depth over time.
