Pignan is Rayas second wine. Much of Pignan comes from Northern Rhone, and as such can also looked at as a unique brand. In some years Pignan is an amazing wine that while not at the level of Rayas, it’s still outstanding (like 1990 vintage)..
Pignan takes its name from the pine trees that surround the vineyard as Pignan is French for pinetree.Pignan is produced from 100% Grenache.
The grapes from young vines are included in the final blend. Pignan is aged for 16 months in demi-muids and foudres before bottling.
Only 650 cases are produced of Pignan each year.
Vivid red. Intensely perfumed, expressive aromas of red and dark berry compote, smoky minerals and incense, along with a deep note of black cardamom. Palate-saturating raspberry and kirsch flavors are complicated by suggestions of licorice pastille and candied lavender, with silky tannins adding support. Becomes sappier with air and finishes with excellent clarity and mineral-laced red fruit character.
