2013 Ata Rangi Celebre Syrah Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, Martinborough

Pronounced 'say-lebr', this is a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Robust and vibrantly fruity, it typically has impressive weight and depth of plummy, spicy, slightly herbal flavours in a complex style that matures well. There was no 2010 or 2012. The outstanding 2013 vintage (5*) is a blend of Merlot (55 per cent), Syrah (35 per cent) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10 per cent). Full-coloured, with a spicy, fragrant bouquet, it is mouth-filling, with dense, vibrant plum/pepper flavours, a hint of dark chocolate, good complexity and a well-spiced, lingering finish. An elegant, very youthful red, it should be at its best 2017+.
