Château La Négly La Côte 2013 from the Languedoc is a dark, moody and seductive red that captures the rugged Mediterranean soul of the La Clape limestone outcrop. These windswept vineyards look straight over the sea, with bush vines rooted deep in fractured limestone, sandstone and ancient marine sediments. The result is concentration without heaviness and a distinct salty mineral edge that gives the wine tension and drive. Syrah takes the lead here, supported by Mourvèdre and Grenache, harvested ripe but not overdone, and matured in a mix of barrel and concrete to hold onto the vineyard’s natural energy.

The aromas draw you in with black cherry, blackberry and plum, layered with rosemary, bay leaf and wild thyme from the garrigue that surrounds the vines. There’s an earthy savouriness beneath the fruit. Smoky notes of cured meat, cracked pepper and a flicker of black olive give a nod to the Rhône influence, while a faint saline breeze reminds you the sea is close by. As it opens, cocoa, violet and licorice add extra drama.

The palate is powerful, structured and textured yet wonderfully balanced. Silky black fruits glide over deep, fine tannins driven by Syrah’s muscle and Mourvèdre’s grip. Dark chocolate, spice, dried herbs and stony minerality unfold in long, savoury layers. A fresh line of acidity keeps the wine lifted and focused, leading into a persistent finish that lingers with peppery detail, graphite and Mediterranean warmth. Over the years it has softened beautifully, now settling into a luxurious, ready-to-drink window, though it still has years of life ahead.

Superb with lamb shoulder slow cooked with rosemary, roast duck, chargrilled steak, mushroom dishes, cassoulet or aged hard cheeses. It’s a wine that brings a touch of drama to the table.
