Matured for 18 months in French barriques (25% new). The fragrant, fruit-driven bouquet leads into a medium-bodied palate that manages to be both juicy and firm, the latter reflecting the polished tannins that provide structure. October 2016

The 2013 Paringa Estate Shiraz from the Mornington Peninsula is a benchmark cool-climate Shiraz that showcases the elegance and spice-driven character the region is known for. Paringa Estate, founded by Lindsay McCall in 1985, has built a reputation as one of the Peninsula’s leading producers, particularly for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz grown on its steep, north-facing slopes in Red Hill. The 2013 vintage was warm and balanced, yielding Shiraz with intensity, perfume and excellent structure.
In the glass it is deep ruby with garnet highlights. The bouquet is complex and lifted, with dark cherry, blackberry and plum aromas interwoven with black pepper, cloves, violets and a touch of smoked meat. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with ripe dark fruits layered against savoury spice, fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity. Subtle oak notes of mocha and vanilla frame the fruit without overpowering it, while the finish is long, elegant and beautifully poised.
Food pairings highlight its spice and savoury depth: roast duck with star anise, lamb shoulder with rosemary, chargrilled venison, or vegetarian dishes like mushroom ragù. It also pairs well with firm cheeses such as aged cheddar or Manchego. With 12 to 15 years of cellaring potential, the 2013 Paringa Estate Shiraz develops even greater complexity, gaining earthy, leathery and truffle-like notes while maintaining its vibrant core of fruit and spice.
