On a grey morning in July 1941, Reginald William Germein and John Crighton Edwards joined the Royal Australian Airforce. These men, Helen and John Edwards’ ancestors are the true founding fathers of The Lane Vineyard.
RG, a tribute wine to Helen’s father Reg, is taking Australian Chardonnay to new levels of excellence, comparable with Burgundy’s great wines and soaring above many of Australia’s ‘known’ champs. The exquisite fruit is pressed straight to barrel and left to ferment naturally, no chemistry or additives here, simply beautiful fruit from a great site, it really has the vineyard talking in every glass. This wonderful Chardonnay has great mouthfeel and length, impeccable structure and natural acidity, fruit purity, balance and textural complexity. Enjoy now or age at your leisure.

Full straw-green; there's no doubting the class and complexity of this wine, but it was tasted against the might of the greatest Margaret River and Yarra Valley chardonnays at a similar (or lower) price point, and didn't come out the winner. This is a tough call for a wine with lots of varietal flavour and good acidity, but it's a tough world out there.

2012 RG is a wine which makes me want to sit down and think for a moment about just how bloody lucky I am. It is a wine which demands a moment of peace and reflection because it is knowing and patient in the glass. It makes me consider its flavour in relation to all other great Chardonnays in the world and celebrate its similarities and its differences. It is a wine that whispers terroir and respect while striking a staggeringly beautiful and unique flavour silhouette. The elite wine from The Lane is always a showstopper, but 2012 appears to slow time to a manageable speed so you can appreciate just how delicious it really is.
