Fruit for Vat 47 only ever comes from Short Flat vineyard, planted in the late 1960’s.
The 2013 Vat 47 represents a continued evolution in style towards a more delicate and textural Chardonnay.
Hand-picked and basket pressed. Once the ferment was roughly 50% of the way through the wine was transferred into French oak barriques (20% new) to complete fermentation and maturation.
Youthful colour. The nose shows delicate citrus and white stonefruit with a hint of oak and sulphide lift. The palate shows an amazing length of flavour and mouth feel and some secondary characters derived from the slight solids ferment. The fruit is balanced well with the fresh acidity and slight textural element from extended time on lees.
A great example of modern Hunter Valley chardonnay with its citrus/acid backbone, which is a benefit of no malolactic fermentation. Drink now to 2025+.

Tyrrell's made its first Vat 47 in '71 and soon embraced barrel fermentation in French oak, to all intents and purposes the leader of the pack, playing the same role that Max Lake had played with cabernet in '65-'66, so it's hardly surprising Tyrrell's is a skilled practitioner.
Still a vibrant youthful straw-green; white peach and nectarine drive the engine on this lovely chardonnay; barrel ferment oak inputs and slinky acidity adding to the texture.
Many of its gold medals and trophies were collected in '16, reflecting the overall complexity and balance of the wine. Drink by 2017.
