2013 Chateau de Bellet Blanc, Provence

2013 Château de Bellet Blanc from Provence is a rare and captivating white wine that reflects both the elegance and individuality of the tiny Bellet appellation, located high in the hills above Nice on France’s Mediterranean coast. Château de Bellet is one of the region’s most historic estates, with vineyards perched on steep terraces overlooking the sea, planted on pebble and sand soils known locally as “poudingue.” These unique conditions, along with the cooling influence of altitude and maritime breezes, produce wines of remarkable freshness and finesse.

The 2013 vintage was marked by a mild winter and a long, even growing season, allowing the white varieties — Rolle (Vermentino) and a touch of Chardonnay — to ripen slowly, developing complex aromatics and bright acidity. Grapes were hand harvested and gently pressed, with fermentation taking place partly in stainless steel and partly in French oak barrels to balance purity and texture. Lees ageing for several months added depth and creamy complexity while preserving the delicate floral and mineral notes typical of Bellet whites.

In the glass it shines pale gold with green reflections. The aroma is refined and expressive, showing white peach, pear, lemon zest and acacia flower, with hints of almond, sea spray and flint. The palate is elegant and textural, combining citrus and orchard fruit with subtle honeyed notes, fine acidity and a saline mineral finish. It’s a wine that feels both coastal and alpine — luminous, layered and full of character.

Château de Bellet Blanc 2013 is superb with grilled fish, Provençal seafood stew, shellfish or roast chicken with herbs. It also pairs beautifully with goat cheese, vegetable tarts or dishes seasoned with lemon and olive oil. Now fully mature, it shows its best balance of fruit, savoury depth and minerality, though it still has several years of graceful drinking ahead.
