Selected from vineyard blocks in Frankland River and Mount Barker, open-fermented in small vats, matured for 15 months in new and used French oak. A serious, powerful full-bodied wine that suffers fools badly, and might be confused with cabernet in a blind tasting thanks to savoury tannins that provide a platform for the blackberry, black cherry and plum fruits, all with a dusting of spice and pepper; French oak also contributes.
Flint Rock is the in-house name for the subregions of the Great Southern. Bright colour is the right introduction to a sleekly groomed (I was about to write warm and cuddly, but thought better of it) shiraz with a perfect array of dark cherry, spice and pepper aromas and flavours supported by soft tannins and a feather duster of oak.
