Pulled from the chalky slopes above the Loire and shaped by one of Vouvray’s most quietly influential houses, this 2015 release shows exactly why Marc Brédif has such a loyal following among lovers of Chenin Blanc. Founded in 1893 and now part of the Baron Patrick de Ladoucette stable, the estate has built its reputation on patience, with wines often spending extended time in their limestone caves before release, gaining texture and detail rather than rushing to market.
The 2015 vintage in the Loire was warm and generous, giving Chenin Blanc a little more flesh while still holding onto that signature line of acidity that keeps everything in check. Fruit grown on classic tuffeau limestone soils brings both minerality and lift. There is a lovely interplay here between ripe orchard fruit and freshness, with pear, yellow apple and hints of quince layered alongside citrus zest, white blossom and a gentle touch of honey. A subtle waxy edge starts to creep in, adding texture, while the finish stays clean and persistent with a fine mineral thread.
This is a versatile bottle at the table and far more interesting than the usual white wine pairings. Think grilled King George whiting with a squeeze of lemon and capers, or scallops seared hard and served with a cauliflower and hazelnut purée. It also works beautifully with Vietnamese flavours like lemongrass chicken or a fresh rice paper roll packed with herbs and prawns, where the acidity cuts through and refreshes.
There is plenty of life ahead here. Drink now for its vibrancy and purity or hold for another five to ten years as it develops more honeyed and nutty complexity.
