The supremely fragrant bouquet has a platform of black fruits so tightly laced with charcuterie, licorice, spice and black pepper you can't break free until you reach the mouthwatering, medium-bodied palate of exceptional length and balance, the texture silk with a velvet rim.

Deepish red/purple colour, youthful. The bouquet has a strong whole-bunch component: an ashy, peppery, root vegetable thing. The wine is full-bodied and has a belt of alcohol warmth on the back-palate and aftertaste. There are also ample tannins adding a touch of astringency and chew on the follow-through. Very good intensity and abundant ageing potential. 06 Oct 2017 Drink 2020–2040

Mount Langi Ghiran Langi Shiraz is one of Australia’s great cool climate Shiraz wines, shaped by the dramatic granite ridges of the Grampians in western Victoria. The vineyard sits in a natural amphitheatre beneath Mount Langi Ghiran, where high altitude, cold nights and poor, stony soils slow ripening and lock in intense aromatics, fine tannins and vibrant acidity. It is a place that gives Shiraz spice and structure rather than sheer weight.

Mount Langi Ghiran has been a benchmark for this style since the late 1960s, when the original vineyard was planted and quickly gained a reputation for producing Shiraz of incredible perfume and longevity. Over the decades it has become one of the most iconic sites in the country, known for wines that age gracefully and develop layers of savoury complexity.

In the glass, Langi Shiraz shows dark cherry, blackberry and plum, lifted by cracked pepper, violets, clove and a distinctive ironstone, granite like savoury note. The palate is medium to full bodied but tightly wound, with fine, chalky tannins and bright acidity giving drive and length. It is powerful without heaviness, and elegant without losing intensity.

This is a superb food wine. Roast lamb, grilled beef, game meats, mushroom dishes or anything cooked over fire all highlight its spice and savoury depth.

Mount Langi Ghiran Langi Shiraz is drinking beautifully with air when young, but it is made for the long term. Expect it to evolve over fifteen to twenty five years, gaining more pepper, leather and earthy complexity with time. It is a true Australian classic and one of the finest expressions of Shiraz in a cool climate.
