The Donaldson Family have been seriously involved in viticulture and winemaking for over 40 years. Founder Ivan Donaldson planted the first Canterbury vineyard in 1976 and went on to establish Pegasus Bay in 1986 with his wife Christine. It is a true family business, with all four of their sons and two spouses involved, managing various aspects.
Pegasus Bay has now released its next vintage of the Reserve Prima Donna Pinot Noir. 2015 was an exceptional year for the Waipara Valley, after no Prima Donna was produced in 2014.
From a low yielding vineyard that is situated facing north, experiencing warm days and also some of the coolest night temperatures in the Waipara Valley. A cooler than average spring produced a smaller flowering, however this resulted in excellent berry concentration. The smaller crop reached optimum ripeness from a warm summer and long lingering autumn.
The new Prima Donna vintage shows a deep ruby color. The nose is packed with vibrant red fruits of strawberry, pomegrenate and raspberry. Beneath there is a savoury underlay, evoking impressions of roast game, spicy pepper and black olive tapenade. The palate, rich and intense, reveals velvety taninns, well balanced by refreshing acidity that helps draw out the wine's lingering finish.
