This is the best of the best of my Mataro from old Barossa vines grown in the rich red soils of the northern Barossa in wet cold winters and hot dry summers producing concentration rarely found anywhere in the world.Mataro is an underestimated grape that defies a standard recipe and must be closely cared for to let it be its best. This wine spends extra time in new French oak until it’s in unison. This ensures the wine is multidimensional, soft and slippery. It is complex, full of flavour, spice, earth and red fruits. As a winemaker, it always keeps you on your toes. One year it comes out with muscle and gusto; the next year it has the finesse of a great dancer. This is why I love Mataro. My obsession is to make Mataro dance with gusto.
Travis Earth
Travis Earth 808 Mataro from Barossa Valley is a robust and earthy expression of the Mataro grape (also known as Mourvèdre in France and Monastrell in Spain). Crafted by winemaker Travis Earth, this wine embodies the Barossa’s reputation for producing full-bodied, intense reds while embracing the rustic charm of the Mataro grape. Travis Earth is known for his hands-on, small-batch approach, focusing on minimal intervention and allowing the natural character of the grape and terroir to shine.
The 808 Mataro is sourced from old vines in the Barossa Valley, a region famous for its warm climate and rich soils, ideal for cultivating Mataro. This grape is known for producing wines with deep color, firm tannins, and savory, earthy characteristics. The wine typically offers aromas of dark berries, plum, and dried herbs, with earthy undertones and hints of spice. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and bold, with rich, dark fruit flavors, balanced by fine-grained tannins and a savory, lingering finish that shows off its depth and complexity.
This wine pairs wonderfully with hearty dishes like slow-cooked meats, game, and rich stews, and it has the structure to develop further with age, making it a great choice for both immediate enjoyment and cellaring.
