2015 Vincent Girardin Pouilly-Fuisse Les Vieilles Vignes, sits on the leaner side of the spectrum. Taut lemon grapefruit flavours, are intermingled with ripe nectarine and a touch of quince. Touches of chalky minerals are wrapped around subtle oak, that is displaying smoky bacon. While this may sound a lot it is still very elegant. Good mouthfeel, long finish, make this an impressive package. Serve with a snapper pie.
The 50 year old vines used in making Girardin Pouilly-Fuisse are grown in the Maconnais, South Burgundy. The grapes are harvested by hand, lightly pressed and then pressed at low pressure to get slow extraction. The wine is matured for 10 months on fine lees in 500L French oak casks (10% new) (to allow both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation).
The resultant wine is delicate and distinguished showing greeny-gold colour. Aromas of hazelnut, toasted almond and mineral notes are harmoniously blended with local soils flavour.
‘This wine is raised in 500-litre oak barrels for ten months, plus two in stainless steel, has bright lifted apple and lemon aromas. The palate is well-balanced with crisp citrus and a bright fresh finish. This is really a delightful Pouilly Fuisse.’
