16 to 18 months ageing in 100% new oak casks
The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Coeur de Roy" comes from vines that are 50+ years old, matured in two-thirds new oak with 50% whole-cluster fruit. Now this has a generous and expressive bouquet with billowing scents of black cherry, raspberry, cassis and sous-bois, very well defined and soaking that new oak up so that you barely notice its guiding presence. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a crisp line of acidity lending tautness and linearity, precise and detailed toward the finish. This is one of the best Coeur du Roy cuvées that I have tasted from barrel. Drink 2022-2036.

Firm reduction. On the plus side I really like the texture of the dense and relatively refined medium weight plus flavours that also brim with both minerality and dry extract while offering superb finishing depth on the beautifully lengthy finish that is a bit less youthfully austere than usual. While this is also firmly structured there is enough buffering sap such that this could be enjoyed young if that's your preference. Drink 2030+.
