Aromas of graphite, earth and black currants. It is really elegant, nuanced and delicate, with precise, subtle fruit and an almost ethereal palate. The tannins are tender, yet with enough focus and precision to be cohesive and fully integrated. Elegance at its best. Drinkable now, but it will evolve toward an even more delicate and beautiful expression with time. Drink or hold. 10 Years On retrospective.

100 points Jacobo García Andrade for James Suckling  Jan 2026

The 2016 Chateau Margaux is pure perfection in the bottle. Silky, elegant and round, this wine has it all. The assemblage was quite rigorous in this vintage (94% Cabernet Sauvignon with small parts Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot). This wine only represented 26 percent of their harvest. Quite astounding amounts of wine was either blended into their third wine or was sold in bulk, On the nose this takes on a huge range of aromatics from blueberry compote, to tar, to mocha and anise as this is already shining brightly aromatically. The palate has an exceedingly deep core with creme de cassis, mocha, anise, red bell pepper and blueberry compote. Massive and intense, this gorgeous wine is merely an infant now and needs at least ten years in the cellar. This will be a hugely long lived wine.

100 points Owen Bargreen

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Château Margaux (blended of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot) sashays out of the glass with glamorous red currants, candied violets, kirsch and crushed blackcurrants scents followed by notions of tilled black soil, forest floor, cast iron pan and cigar box with subtle wafts of lavender and oolong tea. Medium-bodied, mineral laced accents hover over the palate with an ethereal sensation of weightlessness, yet it is super intense with layers of red and black flavors supported by a firm texture of silt-fine tannins, finishing wonderfully fragrant and incredibly long.

99 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown for The Wine Advocate

A bright, red, fresh vintage, the wine provides lift, energy and a nice pop in the red berries. Silky, elegant, lifted and long, there is a gorgeous purity to the black raspberry, black currant and red berry palate. You are going to need to wait for this beauty to develop, as the wine has a lot of structure and freshness that needs to round out. The wine was made from a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot.

99 points Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider Sep 2019

With a rare 94% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, this wine is packed both with black-currant flavors and impressive tannins and acidity. It moves Château Margaux into a new dimension with its dense, dry core of tannins that will power the wine into a seriously long-term future. Drink from 2025.

99 points Roger Voss, The Wine Enthusiast

Few estates embody the elegance of Bordeaux quite like Château Margaux. Crowned a First Growth in the 1855 Classification, the estate has set the benchmark for the Margaux appellation for more than two centuries. Under the stewardship of the Mentzelopoulos family and technical director Philippe Bascaules, Château Margaux continues to produce wines of extraordinary purity, precision and grace, where Cabernet Sauvignon reaches one of its highest expressions anywhere in the world.

The magnificent 2016 vintage is universally recognised as one of Bordeaux's modern legends. A near perfect growing season delivered fruit of exceptional concentration, freshness and harmony, while the estate's deep gravel soils produced Cabernet Sauvignon of breathtaking finesse and remarkable ageing potential. Every parcel was meticulously selected to create a wine that perfectly reflects the grandeur of this iconic estate.

Deep garnet with youthful purple highlights, the bouquet is captivatingly layered with cassis, black cherry and blackberry intertwined with violets, rose petals and fine cedar. As the wine unfolds, notes of graphite, cigar box, truffle and exotic spice emerge, revealing extraordinary complexity and refinement. The palate is seamless and majestic, combining immense fruit concentration with cashmere fine tannins, vibrant freshness and an effortlessly graceful mineral core. The finish is exceptionally long and weightless, echoing with floral perfume, dark fruits and the timeless elegance that defines Château Margaux.

An unforgettable partner for roast pigeon, Chateaubriand, herb crusted rack of lamb, black truffle dishes or aged Comté. One of the defining First Growths of the vintage, this magnificent Bordeaux will continue to evolve and reward collectors for generations.

Cellaring: Drink from 2028 to 2075+.
