The 2016 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is showing superbly from bottle, unwinding in the glass with a classy bouquet of crisp green apple, pears, almond paste, fresh pastry and Meyer lemon. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and precise, with serious depth, tangy acidity, and chewy structuring dry extract while remaining elegantly textural. Intense and complete, it's an immensely promising wine which augers well for Bonneau du Martray's future.
This was an impressive set of wines from Domaine Bonneau du Martray, where I tasted with new cellar master Emmanuel Hautus. The wines show increasing coherence and precision, and some subtle refinements in cellar technique, lead me to believe that they will age more dependably than has sadly been the case at this address in the last two decades. Impressive investment in the vineyards—above all, extensive replanting of the Domaine's Pinot Noir holdings—also bode well for the future. In the near future, once the new team has a few more vintages under their belt, I'll be reporting more thoroughly on developments here. Drink to 2045

A pungent nose reflects notes of menthol, wood toasty and a type of reduction the Burgundians call bourgeon de cassis. The succulent, indeed juicy medium- bodied flavors possess a lovely texture and fine mid-palate concentration before culminating a minerally yet suave finish that delivers sneaky good length. If this can add more depth with a decade of bottle age it could well merit the upper end of my predicted range. Drink: 2026+

Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne Rouge Grand Cru is one of Burgundy’s rarest and most intriguing wines, coming from the legendary Hill of Corton where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay have shared these slopes since the Middle Ages. While the domaine is famous worldwide for its iconic Corton Charlemagne white, a tiny parcel of Pinot Noir is also grown here, rooted in limestone and marl soils high on the hill where cooler air and stony ground give the wine extraordinary finesse and mineral tension. Bonneau du Martray farms biodynamically, working the vineyards by horse and hand, nurturing deep living soils and old vines that transmit the voice of Corton with remarkable purity.
The wine shows a deep ruby core with bright highlights, opening with aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry, rose petal, iron and crushed stone, layered with subtle spice and earthy undertones. On the palate it is both powerful and refined, delivering vivid red fruit, fine grained tannins and a savoury, mineral driven finish that speaks clearly of its Grand Cru origins. It is magnificent with roast duck, game birds, veal and mushroom dishes, and it has the structure to age for twenty years or more, gaining truffle, leather and dried flower complexity as it matures.
