2016 Flametree Shiraz, Margaret River

Flametree Shiraz is a confident, modern expression of Margaret River that leans into savoury detail, freshness and regional restraint rather than sheer power. The fruit is sourced from vineyards across southern Margaret River, an area strongly influenced by cooling Indian Ocean breezes. These maritime conditions slow ripening, preserve natural acidity and shape Shiraz that feels energetic and composed. Gravelly loam soils over clay contribute structure and depth without pushing the wine into heaviness.

Flametree Wines is led by Cliff Royle, whose winemaking philosophy is firmly centred on balance and site expression. Shiraz is handled with a light but deliberate touch. Fruit is picked to retain freshness, extraction is controlled to avoid excess weight, and oak is used carefully to frame the wine rather than dominate it. The aim is a Shiraz that speaks clearly of Margaret River’s coastal influence rather than mimicking warmer inland styles.

In the glass, the wine is dark and expressive, but restrained. Blackberry, black cherry and plum sit at the core, followed by black pepper, liquorice and subtle spice. As it opens, savoury elements come forward. Dried herbs, olive tapenade, earth and a faint graphite note add complexity and a distinctly regional feel.

On the palate, Flametree Shiraz is medium to full bodied and well proportioned. Dark fruit flavours move smoothly through the mid palate, supported by fine, ripe tannins that provide shape without grip. Acidity is bright and well judged, giving lift and length. Oak is neatly integrated, contributing gentle spice and savoury nuance rather than sweetness. The finish is long, clean and quietly persistent, with dark fruit and spice lingering alongside a subtle coastal savoury edge.

This is a highly food friendly Shiraz. It works beautifully with grilled lamb, roast beef, barbecue, mushrooms or dishes with smoky or herbal elements. It is drinking very well now for its balance and polish, but it will also cellar comfortably over eight to twelve years, gaining more savoury and earthy complexity with time.
