Biodynamic
The Oratoire vineyards are located on steep hills in predominantly two climats of Cairanne: Saint-Martin and Les Douyes. For the Réserve des Seigneurs the Alary brothers blend old vine parcels of Grenache (60%), Mourvèdre (30%) and Syrah (average vine age roughly 65 years).
Following fermentation with indigenous yeast in concrete vats, the wine was matured for 15 months and bottled without fining or filtration. No sulphur was used during the winemaking and only a touch at bottling. After a number of vintages, Grenache is back in the driving seat bringing here yet this wine offers more complexity than a single variety can offer.
Biodynamic. 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah. The Oratoire vineyards are located on steep hills in predominantly two climats of Cairanne: Saint-Martin and Les Douyes. For the Réserve des Seigneurs the Alary brothers blend old vine parcels of Grenache, Mourvèdre and a little Syrah (average vine age roughly 65 years), from both the yellow clay and limestone of Saint-Martin (mostly) and a little fruit from their Les Douyes vineyard (see below). The yields can dip as low as 20 hectolitres per hectare depending on the vintage.
It shows the depth and power of the vintage with a complex, lifted, spicy nose that suggests blood orange, dark cherry fruits and spice. The palate is rich and powerful with deep, confit plum, cacao powder and star anise and a long, warm, powdery close. Old vine depth for a very fair price.
Pure black fruit within the wide bouquet, black cherry and blackberry and dried thyme. There's sound richness, good layered content, and tannins that stretch out well. The Grenache gives a plum presence, and there's something of blood oranges towards the finish. There is good, well-knit content. There are flashes of Mourvèdre darkness here and there, the length genuine and fresh.
