There really aren’t many places in the world outside of Piedmont where you can coax Nebbiolo into something that is both fine and varietal ….. I think this vineyard in Gumeracha is one of the very few places in Australia if not the world that this project could work.
The eighth release of Pannell Nebbiolo is a blend of five different clones from a Gumeracha vineyard in the Adelaide Hills that is certified Biodynamic. Made in the style of traditional Barolo: Extended maceration on skins with the decision to press made purely on taste. This gives a very different tannin profile, winding them from the center of the mouth through to the very back palate.
Highly perfumed with notes of red cherry, rose water, fennel bulb, cassis, chestnut puree and marjoram along with terracotta tiles and cedar. Medium bodied and flavoursome. Unashamedly tannic with an almost unrivalled balance of acid and flavour, perfect weight and a tremendously long finish.
Nebbiolo is a variety that ages particularly well due to the preserving nature of its proud tannins, allowing it to age gracefully for 10 or more years. This wine has developed quite the cult status. There really aren’t many places in the world outside of Piedmont where you can coax Nebbiolo into something that is varietal, detailed and structured. This vineyard is one of the very few places in Australia that this project can work.
Hand-picked, 21 days fermentation/maceration, matured for 16 months in used puncheons. The grapes must have been ultra-expensive - all other costs are minimal. It's a light, bell-clear crimson, the flavours of red cherry and sour cherry, the tannins silky - a masterpiece.

Typical nebbiolo. Light to medium-depth brick-red colour, with a slightly medicinal but complex aroma of ironstone, dried herbs and flowers, while the tannins are quite firm and typical of this grape. It's full bodied, rich and fleshy, with lots of detail and charm, the backbone firm and solid but not astringent or harsh. Very good nebbiolo.
