Select parcels off the Great Western Vineyard were fermented on skins (with partial whole bunch and whole berry) in open fermenters for 10 days, followed by maturation for 14 months in a combination of 3000 L vat, 500L and 225 L French Oak barrels (with 35% new oak).
Deep red with purple hues. A complex, perfumed nose of violets and dark fruit laced with sweet spice, freshly cracked black pepper and charcuterie notes. The palate displays mulberry fruit combined with tight, fine tannins, a core of graphite-like mineral texture and a backbone of well-integrated spicy oak. This wine is delicately poised yet powerful with a persistent length of flavour. Drink 2018-2036.
At this stage still quite closed. Nothing leaps out of the glass, and what you find with exploration is given up reluctantly. Deep and brooding, there are aromas of charcuterie, red and black fruits, and a suggestion of the countryside - freshly mown hay and dust. The palate is dense but it feels medium-bodied, with ripe but slightly tart-edged fruit buried in a surreptitiously enveloping cloak of tannin that builds and builds. This wine will take you on an intriguing journey if you have the time to follow it.
