Mike and Margaret Hanson spent a long time searching for the perfect piece of land before finding what is now ‘Hanson Vineyard’ in 1996 and creating The brand. Their philosophy is simply to make single vineyard wines of uncompromised quality. Using only their own Estate Grown fruit, from the best vintages, placing a strong emphasis on the elegant, yet complex characteristics of great pinots.
The vineyard is located on an elevated river terrace at the southern end of the Te Muna Valley, at the confluence of the Ruakokopatuna and Huangarua Rivers. The grapes are grown following organic principles in the most sustainable manner possible, with minimal use of irrigation.
The 2016 Pinot Noir was made by Paul Mason, winemaker at Martinborough Vineyard.
Aromas of ripe dark red cherries and berry fruit abound on the nose with smoky, savoury notes floating in the background. A hint of floral perfume adds intrigue and complexity. On the palate the wine shows layers of red fruit and notes of spice with fine chalky tannins forming the backbone of this rich and succulent Pinot. This is a superbly balanced, elegant and weighted Pinot Noir, capable of ageing for up to six years.
