2017 Bannockburn Chardonnay, Geelong, very stylish Burgundian influenced new world chardonnay. Ripe nectarine peach, quince with honeyed oak influence. Delicious from beginning to end. Match with miso salmon confit.
Bannockburn's Estate Chardonnay us drawn from the estate's 'Olive Tree', 'Winery' and 'Stuart' vineyards, on volcanic soils over limestone, with the average age of vines sitting around the 35-year-old mark. The fruit was whole berry pressed - without settling out the solid material - and wild fermented in 500 litre French oak puncheons (20% new). There followed 14 months on lees, full malolactic fermentation, minimal stirring and no sulphur prior to a small addition before bottling.
This wine has consistently been rated as one of Australia’s best Chardonnays, reflecting the ideal combination of soils, climate and mature vines.
“ This is a good experience. It's loaded with flavour, shapely and long, fresh while being powerful. It feels pent up, almost muscular, shows stone fruit, nougat, almond paste and saline acidity - the palate is a sensational roll of dense interesting and delicious flavours. Perfume is a bit shutdown, but that won't hold you back. Wonderful release."
