In 2010, Best's winemaking team held back a parcel of fruit from the Hill Block vineyard, which would normally go into Bin No. 0. What would happen if this fruit was given an opportunity to shine without the distraction of other fruit? The results were superb. Unlike the wines made from older vines closer to the winery, this expression displayed more overt, pungent aromas of pepper and sweet, fragrant tannins combined with medium-bodied fruit to create a delightfully fresh and vibrant but complex variation of Great Western Shiraz.

And so the White Gravels Hill Shiraz was born, named after the geology of this vineyard, with its deposits of pebbles and cobbles of reef quartz, known as White Hills Gravel. This is a wine that is made in small quantities.

This wine was produced using traditional methods including hand picking, whole bunch open fermentation and basket pressing.

Vibrant dark red. Punchy aromatics including cardamom, peppercorn, charcuterie and potpourri. Medium bodied with spicy red fruit flavours through the lush palate and long-lasting graphite tannins to finish. Great to drink as a young wine, but will soften and gain complexity for ten years or more.

Hand-picked, open-fermented with 70% whole bunch, 30% whole berry, 14 months in French barrels (15% new). Wow. It has its own personality, its spiced tannins dancing around blackberry and satsuma plum fruit. The finish and aftertaste are utterly superb.
