2017 Ch D'Armailhac 5ème Cru, Pauillac

This is still quite youthful, with dark fruit and graphite aromas. Almost full-bodied, with tight tannins and a very long finish. Vertical, with slightly granular tannins. 68% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot. Drink or hold. From a vertical tasting at the chateau.

The 2017 d’Armailhac has an opulent bouquet despite this comprising one of the highest percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon ever, which Philippe Dhalluin attributes to the maturity of the berries. There is some lovely cassis and blueberry fruit here with a smear of vanilla. The palate is structured with fine tannin, here the Cabernets are much more expressive with a fine bead of acidity, an attractive pencil lead tincture coming through towards the finish. This is a more floral d’Armailhac that will drink well for the next decades. [Readers should note that my sample included 60% new oak although the final blend will be 40%.] Tasted three times with consistent notes.

The 2017 vintage rewarded meticulous vineyard management, producing wines of freshness, balance and classical Left Bank structure. The estate's deep gravel soils delivered Cabernet Sauvignon of impressive purity and aromatic lift, while careful élevage in French oak has shaped a wine that is refined, harmonious and destined to evolve gracefully over time.

Deep garnet with youthful ruby highlights, the bouquet reveals aromas of cassis, blackberry and black cherry layered with cedar, graphite and cigar box. As the wine opens, notes of violets, tobacco leaf, pencil shavings and subtle spice emerge, adding complexity and unmistakable Pauillac character. The palate is beautifully composed, combining concentrated black fruits with polished tannins, vibrant acidity and a finely etched mineral backbone. Long, poised and effortlessly balanced, the finish lingers with savoury spice, cedar and refined elegance.

An outstanding partner for roast rack of lamb, Chateaubriand, venison loin, duck with wild mushrooms or mature Comté. Already drinking beautifully with a generous decant, this classic Pauillac has the pedigree and balance to reward patient cellaring over the next two decades.
