The Cuvée Classique (as this wine is known) is drawn predominantly from the Domaine's vines on the mid-slope of the Clos but also plots on the lower and upper parts of the vineyard. There are six parcels in total. These include the lieux-dits: Montiottes Basses, Quatorze-Journaux and Quartier Marei Bas (home also to the 1910-planted vieilles vignes parcel). The smallest holdings are those in the Quatorze-Journaux and Baudes-Saint-Martin lieux-dits, two parcels at the bottom of the slope that sandwich Etienne Grivot's vines, and La Plante l'Abbé, at the top of the Clos, near the Château and the Grands-Echezeaux border. All of these vineyards have been managed organically for well over 20 years and are now pushing 70 years of age on average. As for all the reds here, this was fermented 100% whole bunch in old concrete vats. It was then aged in 50% new oak. The barrels were fashioned, according to the season, by renowned Burgundian cooper Stéphane Chassin.
There's plenty of density and depth here although there is also a lovely tenderness for this early stage of the wine's evolution. Expect layers of sweet blackcurrant and dark cherry fruit along with plenty of sappy and spicy complexity and fine, cedar-y oak. There's terrific drive and purity and a long, vibrant and savoury finish. The super-classy oak is present, as you would expect for such a young wine. When you consider the pricing now being paid for GC wines of equivalent quality, this represents outstanding value.
The grapes come from all sectors of their vineyard, vinified with whole bunches and aged in 50% new wood. Rich dense purple, all about the fruit and not the oak. This absolutely fills out the middle of the palate before tailing in to the structure of the finish. Not very high in acid, though acceptable, darkish and ripe fruit. Has a little more crunch at the finish."
