All Cullen Wines are grown on a certified Biodynamic, Carbon Neutral and naturally powered estate. Grapes are harvested by hand on fruit and flower days according to the astrological calendar. The wines have no additions of yeast, acid or malolactic culture, and are in this sense natural wines which express the place and land on which they are grown, the vintage and the people.
Red Moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse when the light filtering through the Earth’s atmosphere dapples the moon in red light. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurred on the 11th of February 2017 during harvest. Fruit from the Mangan Vineyard was hand harvested, fermented naturally and basket pressed to French oak.
This wine was made from a carefully selected blend of Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot grown on the Mangan Vineyard, which has been shown to be ideally suited to nurturing these grape varieties.
Brilliant, deep purple colour, with a shy but fresh, clean, straightforward berry and plum aroma, bold and fruit-driven. The wine is medium to full-bodied and firm, with abundant soft tannins and fresh acidity. It's bright and bold and drinks well now, but a little cellaring may build more complexity. Interesting that the flavours are ripe when the fruit was obviously picked at moderate sugar levels. 12 JUN 2018
Huon Hooke The Real Review
This is a new Mangan vineyard wine, celebrating a red moon eclipse (11FEB17) that occurred around harvest. It is mostly malbec with a large portion of petit verdot and a splash of merlot. A wonderful event to celebrate in a single wine, and great to see Vanya et al at Cullen always pushing ideas and their biodynamic life into new wines.
A light, crisp, energetic red wine of crunchy red berry fruit featuring strawberry, cherry and pomegranate-like flavours. The bouquet is floral too, with big whiffs of pot pourri and faint green herbs lending character. It’s such a vibrant, electric mouthful of wine, skies away from the more elegant, shapely reds that make up the flagships of Cullen. Train tracks of sleek tannin lend some shape. In some respects, it’s a wild-edged wine, free form and eclectic, but can’t escape its pedigree, per se. A nerd in hipster clothing. I like it.
