Working in Beaune and surrounds gives David Croix limited access to Chardonnay, but he lets rip with this striking, luminous Corton-Charlemagne. For several years now it has lain, largely a hidden gem in our portfolio, and yet it’s one of the very finest whites we ship. The wine comes from two small, high-sited parcels totalling only 0.25 hectares, both in the white marls of Le Charlemagne. These plots—alternatively west and north facing on both sides of Le Charlemagne—were planted in 1984/1985 and 1988/1989, and the vines have been organically managed since 2008. Both parcels are prone to millerandage, producing tiny bunches of ripe, golden berries. The wattage of the 2017—vinified entirety in used barrels—is off the scale. In short it’s a staggeringly pure and energetic Corton Charlie fuelled by racy mixed citrus peel, pulpy stone fruit and a tremendously long, vibrant, mineral close. Allez!
“A pretty, fresh and well-layered nose consists of both white and yellow orchard fruit, and in particular green apple, as well as notes of acacia, mineral reduction and citrus zest. There is excellent volume and punch to the muscular and imposingly-scaled flavors that exhibit a driving minerality on the cool, focused and strikingly long bitter lemon-inflected finish. This terrific effort is very clearly built-to-age yet could probably be enjoyed after only 5-ish years.”
