The Thanisch family has cultivated wine continuously since the year 1636 and can look back on a history covering more than 375 years. The estate has been run as a family business for 11 generations!.
The boutique estate is 7 ha (16 acres) in size, including the most famous vineyard in Germany, the Berncasteler Doctor and the top vineyards Bernkasteler Badstube, Bernkasteler Lay and Bernkasteler Graben. All of the vineyards are planted with 100% Riesling vines, most of which are mature and on original rootstocks.
Wwe. Dr H Thanisch now sits alongside other great Mosel producers such as J.J Prüm, Egon Müller & Markus Molitor.
The 2017er Berncasteler Doctor Auslese was harvested at a massive 120° Oechsle. It offers a superbly smoky and floral nose where yellow peach, earl grey, pear, melon, spices and herbs join the party with airing. The wine has quite some presence on the palate at first, but this presence is wrapped up into delicately sweet, creamy fruits. The finish is smooth, creamy yet very long. This needs a solid decade to fully blossom and could eventually turn out even better than anticipated if the fresher side of this Auslese GK styled Riesling gets the upper hand. 2027-2057'
