Located in Saint Marcel d’Ardèche on the western side of the Rhône river, at the very end of the gorge of the Ardèche, Mas de Libian has belonged to the Thibon family since 1670. A family winery handed down from generation to generation, these 25 hectares have always been worked organically and are certified biodynamic by Demeter; the soils have been subjected to neither pesticides nor weed-killers. The vineyards are plowed by horse. A terroir bathed in sunlight, Mas de Libian proudly identifies as a southern French winery by producing wines from a blend of different grape varieties (Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Counoise, Vaccarese, etc.) from a classically Rhône terroir of rounded river rocks and red clay.
90% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache
A unique wine that deserves wider appreciation. Although it is labelled as a humble Côtes du Rhône Villages, it offers the depth and class usually associated with a top Gigondas, Rasteau or Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
One third of the wine is aged in Stockinger demi-muids (600-litre barrels), two-thirds in cement. This is the finest and most exciting La Calade we have shipped. It’s as though a great Chambolle grower (think Barthod or Roumier) came to the Ardèche to make a great red. Hard to believe it’s Mourvèdre to be honest, it’s just so pure and fine and delicate (in the best way).
Expect racy, raspberry-and-anise-scented fruit shot through with spicy, fine tannins and crystals of cool, tangy freshness. Remarkable class and, again, off-the-charts deliciousness. DO NOT. MISS!
