Pfaffenberg is one of the great Riesling vineyards of Austria. It rises dramatically and steeply straight up from the Danube, enjoying a due south aspect overlooking the river.
The old weathered urgestein-based soil here is derived primarily from gneiss and granite and the vines are over 50 years old. The fruit was hand-picked, crushed and macerated for 12 hours, then cold-settled for 36 hours. Wild-yeast fermented for 10 weeks in stainless steel, then matured over winter on fine lees.
‘Bright green-yellow, silver reflexes. Yellow stone fruit nuances with subtle herbal spice, a hint of rosemary, notes of anise, delicate notes of ripe tangerines, smoky minerality. Complex, close-knit, fine fruit sweetness, lively acidity, notes of ripe peach, good persistence, has secure development potential and great length.’
