A wine I normally love for its complexity, difference and distinct flavours, but this vintage, it borders on being a bit too rich and ripe, the desiccated fruit quite prune-like and porty. Expect wafts of amaro, licorice, Italian herbs and a touch of Christmas cake spice. This is full bodied and drenched in pomace-like tannins. Needs food as a friend.

Freeman Secco Rondinella Corvina from the Hilltops region is an exciting and unique wine that combines Italian heritage with Australian terroir. The Hilltops, located in New South Wales, is gaining a reputation for its ability to produce distinctive, high-quality wines, and this blend of Rondinella and Corvina – two classic Italian varietals – offers an intriguing and fresh twist on traditional Italian wine styles. Freeman Wines, known for their innovative approach, has created a wine that perfectly captures the elegance and versatility of these varietals while showcasing the distinctive character of the Hilltops region.

Rondinella and Corvina are typically used in the production of Italy’s famed Amarone and Valpolicella wines, but the team at Freeman has brought these varieties to Australia, adapting them to the cooler climate of Hilltops, where the temperature fluctuations between day and night help the grapes retain their natural acidity and freshness while developing complex flavors. The wine is fermented using traditional methods and aged in a combination of oak and stainless steel to preserve the fruit purity while adding subtle depth and complexity.

In the glass, Freeman Secco Rondinella Corvina has a vibrant ruby-red color, reflecting its fresh and youthful character. The nose is aromatic, with inviting scents of red berries like cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, along with hints of dried herbs, floral notes, and a touch of spice. The Corvina brings a subtle smoky, herbal note to the bouquet, while the Rondinella contributes fresh fruit and brightness.

On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied with smooth, soft tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity that balances the wine's fruit-forward profile. The flavors are vibrant and juicy, with fresh red berry fruit like cherry and raspberry, along with a touch of earthiness and spice from the oak aging. The wine has a smooth, slightly rounded mouthfeel, with the acidity providing a fresh, zesty finish. The finish is clean and satisfying, with lingering berry flavors and a subtle herbal note that makes it a fun, approachable wine.

Freeman Secco Rondinella Corvina is a versatile and food-friendly wine that pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes. Its bright fruit and smooth tannins make it a great match for grilled meats, such as lamb or pork, as well as Italian-inspired dishes like pasta with tomato-based sauces, pizza, or charcuterie. It’s also a fantastic wine to enjoy with fresh salads, goat cheese, or grilled vegetables. Whether you’re enjoying it with a meal or on its own, this wine is perfect for any occasion.
