Very deep red/purple colour, dark and brooding. Pepper, spice and ironstone aromas, coal dust and smoke, the palate firm and concentrated, with plenty of oomph and a long aftertaste. The tannins are smooth and ample, helping carry the flavour. 29 FEB 2020 Drink 2021–2038

From the limestone-base soils of Stonewell, this has a very complex and spicy dark-plum and blackberry nose. Espresso and dark-chocolate notes, too. The palate is deeply flavored with blackberry, black-cherry and blood-plum flavors, as well as toasted spices and mocha. Smooth tannins. Medium-to full-bodied, very concentrated and very drinkable already. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Perfume and seduction, vanilla cream, plum and apricot kernel, suggestion of marmalade, but kind of refined too. It’s silky and fruit sweet, glide and gloss, fine texture to the dense tannin, peach skin and red fruit, acidity sits neatly inside the wine, and the finish is long and fine. Pure Barossa.

Alex Head has a range of top-end Shiraz – The Blonde, The Brunette and The Redhead. The Blonde is my favourite of the three this year – it is not the most concentrated but it is approachable, even, subtle and seamless. The wine is immediately bright and pure – sweet cranberry and mulberry fruit are lifted by violets and Chinese Five-Spice. It is only mid-weight, but again its seamless balance is the key in a compact and approachable Barossa style. There are ripe tannins that are well integrated in the total package and the wine finishes with great length, its concentration keeping the wine on a long and silky track with purity and focus in spades. Delicious.
