2018 Hentley Farm Villain & Vixen Grenache, Barossa Valley

Hentley Farm’s Villain & Vixen Grenache is one of those Barossa Valley reds that shows just how versatile Grenache can be when made with a lighter, more playful touch. Hentley Farm, tucked away in the western Barossa, is known for crafting bold, site-driven wines, but with the Villain & Vixen range they lean into a more approachable, fruit-forward style designed to be enjoyed young while still showcasing their serious winemaking pedigree.

The Grenache comes from low-yielding old vines rooted in the Barossa’s ironstone and clay soils, giving both vibrant fruit and earthy backbone. In the glass it bursts with raspberry, cranberry, and red cherry, layered with hints of rose petal, spice, and a subtle savoury edge. The palate is silky and medium-bodied, with bright acidity and fine tannins that keep it fresh and lively. It’s a modern expression of Barossa Grenache – juicy, aromatic, and wonderfully drinkable.

Food pairings are all about fun and flavour. Think charcuterie boards with prosciutto and spiced salami, slow-cooked lamb shoulder with herbs, roasted Mediterranean vegetables, or wood-fired pizza with chorizo and peppers. It’s the kind of red you can take to a barbecue or sip over a casual dinner and it still feels special. Cellar potential is around 5 to 8 years, but the style really shines in its youthful vibrancy.
