Fruit from a single vineyard, planted in 1968 with cuttings from Mt Edelstone. Hand picked, matured for 2 years in oak (50% new), a further 2 years in bottle prior to release. A special vineyard that routinely expresses blueberries laced with graphite, sheets of hung deli meat, raspberry, ground white pepper, fresh nutmeg and littered with crushed pink peppercorns. No matter how it is made, or by whom, the fruit shines in a way that evokes memories of the nearby landscape ... towering gum trees, exposed granite boulders in places, and fresh, open air. This is spicy, layered and nuanced. It's really good.

John Howard Angas arrived in SA in 1843, and inter alia gave his name to Angaston, purchasing and developing significant farming property close to the still embryonic town. He named part of this Hutton Vale, and it is this property that is now owned and occupied by his great-great-grandson John and wife Jan Angas. In 2012, the Angas family and Teusner Wines shook hands on a new partnership arrangement, under which the Angases grow the grapes, and Kym Teusner is responsible for the winemaking, sales and marketing of Hutton Vale wines. The vineyards in question first caught Kym’s attention when he was at Torbreck, and he fulfilled a long-term ambition with the new agreement. Just when the future seemed assured, the vineyards were badly affected by a grass fire in August ’14. While much of the vineyard will ultimately be regenerated, some of the oldest grenache vines were completely destroyed, as were 55 of the magnificent 500yo gum trees that are part of the striking landscape of Hutton Vale.

There’s a generosity of dark red and black fruits, whole black pepper spice and herbs on the nose. The palate is brimming with brooding dark red fruits and salty-savoury liquorice notes that characterise Shiraz from this area. The finish is seamless, fine and long. Shiraz from Hutton Vale Farm has proven cellaring pedigree and should evolve over the next 15+ years.
