Rully's Les Cloux vineyard is located just south of the village, with south-easterly exposure on the sirloin cut of Rully 1er Cru overlooking the plain of Saône. Les Cloux is home to Defaix’s oldest vines, which were planted in 1944 on the classic clay/limestone mix found across the best sites in Burgundy. Since 2009 these old vines have been managed organically and are currently in their third year of Ecocert certification. Within Rully, Les Cloux is a site known for its ability to balance elegant and mouth-watering flesh with tangy grip and fine length—and in 2018 you can take that to the bank.
This 1er Cru was whole-bunch pressed, wild-fermented and aged in older barrels (up to seven years old) for 18 months before bottling. Aromas of almond, orange/lemon oil and orchard fruits waft from the glass, melding with perfectly judged, classy oak. The palate is mineral-inflected and gently textured, with both attributes growing in intensity as the wine takes on air. What we love about this release is the level of tension and grip Defaix has found to balance the ripeness of the year. The low-managed yields lend calibrated acidity, elegant shape and length to a great value white Burgundy, that will provide enormous drinking pleasure from day one.
Outstanding. A smoky broad-ranging nose is comprised by notes of mineral reduction, spiced apple, lemon zest and a hint of herbal tea, all of which is trimmed in relatively generous wood. The sleek and nicely detailed medium weight flavors possess more refinement on the citrusy and slightly firmer finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. I very much like the texture, and this is altogether lovely - worth checking out.
