A very impressive wine at this price: the colour deep and bright, the expressive bouquet with earthy/spicy nuances to black fruits. The medium-bodied palate has an extra level of depth aided by supple tannins and a twitch of oak. The value cannot be gainsaid.

The patriarch of this highly successful wine business, Jim Barry, died in 2004, but the business continues under the active management of several of his many children, led by the irrepressible Peter Barry. The ultra-premium release is The Armagh Shiraz, with the McCrae Wood red wines not far behind. Jim Barry Wines is able to draw upon mature Clare Valley vineyards, plus a small holding in Coonawarra. After studying and travelling, third-generation winemaker Tom and commercial manager Sam Barry have joined the business, launching The Barry Bros label. In November 2016, Jim Barry Wines released the first commercial Assyrtiko grown and made in Australia.
Jim Barry Wines is a founding member of Australia's First Families of Wine.
